- The Matter of France begins with The Song of Roland, here translated by Charles Scott Mancrief.
- By the early renaissance, the Italians had picked up the story of Charlemagne's peers. Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato, i.e. Orlando in Love, was first published in 1482 or 1483. This copy is only partially translated.
- Boiardo left the story unfinished at his death, so Ludovico Ariosto continued the story in Orlando Furioso, i.e. Orlando, Mad.
